what is letterpress printing?
Letterpress printing is a 500 year old relief printing technique in which a raised, inked image meets paper with enough pressure to produce a print. Letterpress was the norm from its invention by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century until late in the 19th century. During the 20th century letterpress became too slow, too old, and too hard. Most letterpresses were sold for scrap.
And it's true: letterpress printing isn't quick or easy. It's hard, long work but it yields a warmth and a tactile quality that just can't be achieved with any other printing technique. Especially when combined with soft papers, letterpress printing conveys a beauty that leaves a lasting impression.
Wondering how it actually *works*?
Below are a few excellent videos illustrating the process, using two different types of printing presses.
And, of course, always feel free to email us with any questions at all.
